LAF Staff Attorney

SPANISH SPEAKING STAFF ATTORNEY POSITION: SOUTH SUBURBAN OFFICE

Position: The Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago (LAF) is seeking a Spanish-speaking attorney to start as soon as possible at its South Suburban Office, 900 East 162nd Street, South Holland, Illinois. The attorney will represent individual clients and handle matters having a substantial impact on large numbers of low-income people.

Background: LAF is the largest provider of free legal services to low income residents of Chicago and Suburban Cook County, and one of the premier legal services in the United States. LAF currently employees 85 attorneys, many with substantial legal experience.

Responsibilities: Under the general supervision of a supervisory attorney, the attorney will: (1) interview applicants for legal services, advise and counsel individuals and groups regarding their legal rights, handle a reasonable caseload, and where necessary, engage in the negotiation, trial, and/or appeal of legal issues that have a substantial impact on the rights of eligible clients; and (2) exercise initiative, sound judgement, and creativity in attempting to solve the legal problems of the poor.

Qualifications: An attorney is sought who has a commitment to solve the civil legal problems of low-income individuals and families. Applicants must be able to interview clients in Spanish and communicate with Spanish-speaking clients in writing.

Salary/Benefits:  Salary depends on years of experience; excellent benefits.
