Deputy Director - LAF

DEPUTY DIRECTOR FOR SPECIAL PROJECTS

LEGAL ASSISTANCE FOUNDATION OF METROPOLITAN CHICAGO

Position:  The Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago (LAF) is the largest and most comprehensive provider of free civil legal services to low-income residents throughout Chicago and suburban Cook County.  We deliver those services through 6 intake offices, located throughout Cook County, and more than a dozen special projects, located in our office at 111 W. Jackson Blvd. in downtown Chicago.  LAF has two deputy directors, one in charge of the intake office side, one in charge of the special projects.

The open position is the Deputy Director for Special Projects.  The Deputy’s main responsibility is to supervise the Special Projects (Adult SSI Advocacy, Children’s Law, Disability, Employment, Family Law, HIV/AIDS, Housing, Immigration, Migrant, Ombudsman, Public Benefits Hotline, Seniors, and Veterans).  Substantive knowledge of these areas of law is not required, as each Special Project has an expert supervisor.  But the Deputy must be willing to learn enough to provide support on particular cases and projects.  The Deputy should have broad experience in litigation, at the trial court and the appellate level, and be willing to strategize about cases, edit briefs, and assist with trials and appeals.

In addition, both Deputies advise the Executive Director on personnel and program issues; assist in negotiations with the union representing LAF’s non-supervisory staff; assist with fundraising; and help represent LAF in the larger public interest community.

Qualifications:  Requirements for the Deputy Director are: (1) membership in the Illinois and federal bars; (2) ten or more years of legal experience, with significant knowledge of civil procedure; (3) good trial and appellate advocacy skills; (4) excellent writing and oral communication skills; (5) an interest in mentoring attorneys; (6) the ability to work well with staff; and (7) a demonstrated commitment to serving poor people.

Salary/Benefits:   Depends on experience; excellent fringe benefits.

Applications:   Send a cover letter, resume, two references, and a writing sample, to be received no later than June 15, 2007, to
