Assistant Attorney General - Criminal Appeals Division - Chicago

The Criminal Appeals Division of the Office of the Illinois Attorney General is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Attorney General. Attorneys are responsible for their own cases, which include predominantly responses to petitions for writ of habeas corpus in the United States District Courts. Additionally, attorneys brief and argue habeas corpus appeals before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and criminal appeals in the Illinois Appellate and Supreme Courts. Candidates must be licensed in Illinois, and should have at least two years of related experience. Such experience may include judicial clerkships, work on an appellate court research staff, or appellate litigation with an emphasis or background in federal habeas corpus or state criminal appeals, and candidates should enjoy research and writing.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience, the salary range is $43,000 to $60,000. Federal habeas experience preferred.

Guardian ad litem in adoption cases

The Circuit Court of Cook County has designated five attorneys to serve as Guardian ad litem in adoption cases. These individuals serve for three year terms.  These attorneys agree to accept appointments in accordance with a fee schedule established for routine cases. There are provisions for additional fees if the matters become contested.   There is currently two vacancies.
Applications are being accepted until the close of business July 31, 2006.  These applications only require the submission of a letter of interest and a current resume or curriculum vitae.  Applications will only be accepted if they are hand-delivered or received by mail.

Public Interest Law

The Tobacco Control Legal Consortium has an immediate opening for a full-time staff attorney. The position is located at the Tobacco Law Center, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit corporation affiliated with the William Mitchell College of Law, a century-old independent non-profit law school in
Saint Paul, Minnesota.

The Tobacco Control Legal Consortium is a national network of legal resource centers dedicated to advancing tobacco policy change in the United States by giving advocates better access to legal expertise. The Consortium serves as a legal resource for the national tobacco control community and an academic think tank on tobacco law. The staff attorney responsibilities may include helping with legislative drafting; legal research, analysis and strategy; training and presentations; reparation of friend-of-the-court legal briefs; policy development; and litigation support.

Qualifications include admission to the bar and 5 years of experience in the practice of law. Preference will be given to attorneys with experience in municipal, public health or administrative law. Excellent legal research, writing and public speaking skills are required. Candidates with experience drafting, implementing, or enforcing local or state laws are preferred. Some travel is required. This is a new, grant-funded position and is dependent on the continued availability of funding.

2+ years experience
