Midwest Immigrant & Human Rights Center Staff Attorney

The Midwest Immigrant & Human Rights Center, a program of Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights, is seeking a Staff Attorney for its National Asylum Partnership on Sexual Orientation (NAPSO) Project. The staff attorney will provide direct legal immigration services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) asylum seekers and HIV-positive immigrants. The staff attorney will develop outreach materials to target communities as well as a manual for pro bono attorneys who will provide legal representation to LGBT immigrants and HIV-positive asylum seekers. The staff attorney will also develop partnerships with service providers and pro bono attorneys nationwide to distribute materials and build national capacity for representing this population. In addition, the staff attorney will identify countries from which LGBT asylum seekers are fleeing persecution and seeking protection in the United States and coordinate a fact-finding mission to the identified country(ies).

Duties and Responsibilities:
J.D. and demonstrated experience in immigration law, human rights law, and/or LGBT issues are required. High-level oral and written proficiency in a second language is required;
Spanish or French are preferred.
Excellent written and oral communications, organizational, and computer skills are needed as is the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
Ability to adapt to change and work well under pressure is necessary.
